**Dragonflies are born without wings. They are born into a larvae state and eventually will undergo a partial metamorphosis in which they grow their wings. Depending on the species of dragonfly, some will remain in the larvae state (nymph stage) for up to three years or more. This is how they will spend most of their lives. Sadly, when we see the adult winged dragonfly they are actually near the last stage of their life.
