Consumed Links - October 7, 2011

Here we go with the almost weekly round-up of things that may have been missed around the web.

Let's start with this steamy couple. Apparently this "Chick" (age 71) and her drinking buddy (age 54) felt it was a good idea to hook-up in the back of the car where just about everyone who was hungry got a glimpse of the action. (smokinggun)

Recently there was an art show featuring the (maybe or maybe not) artwork of Fab 5 Freddy. Well, according to this article over at Revok1, Freddy should get ready to pay someone. (revok1)  -- What do you think?

There has been a significant amount of talk about indie labels and Spotify. At hypebot, Jay Frank, makes a pretty good argument of why some artists are just not getting paid what they expected. (hypebot)

Although I never heard of many of these, here are some stories about some famous elephants and their deaths. (listverse)  WARNING: Some of this stuff is animal cruelty at its ugliest and there are photos.

This is relatively old but, if anyone ever cared to listen to David Lee Roth singing acapella..... (WFMU)

How has SoundCloud revolutionized the music industry? Here's how...(fotorater)

And finally, for now....

News

The U.K. Government has refused to accept the European Parliament's legal affairs committee ruling on a 95-year copyright term for music recordings. The European ruling is to be voted on by the Council of Ministers. The U.K. government recently shifted its public position from keeping the copyright term at 50-years and moving it to a 70-year term. David Lammy, the U.K. minister of state for intellectual property, stated "While the U.K. believes that performers should be protected throughout their lifetime a period of 95 years goes beyond what is needed to achieve this aim."

What's Going On?

Rapper Nas has reportedly been in the studio with Damian Marley. Nas' manager, Anthony Saleh, recently told Billboard the project will most likely be released in the spring.

Sorry folks but this is not a joke... Limp Bizkit is returning. They plan to kick off a tour this spring. "We decided we were more disgusted and bored with the state of heavy popular music than we were with each other," Singer Fred Durst and guitarist Wes Borland said in a joint statement. The entire original line-up Durst, Borland, bassist Sam Rivers, drummer John Otto, and DJ Lethal are all on board.

Sold! Death Row Records

Death Row Records has been sold for $18million as part of its Chapter 11 proceedings in Los Angeles.

The new owner is Wide Awake Entertainment. Wide Awake Entertainment
is a Canada based company founded in 2006 with only one recording
at this time to its credit. Billboard Magazine reports that this company
has little experience dealing with the U.S. marketplace and
does not have any distribution deals in place outside
of its southern border.

Laura Lavi, founder and CEO of Wide Awake, said the label has been in contact with several U.S. companies to try to ensure Americans will
still have domestic access to Death Row’s catalogue.
“We have some ideas,” Lavi told Billboard. “We’re very respectful of
Death Row’s legacy and when the time is right we’ll announce that.”
