Useless Fact Of The Week

The theremin was invented in October 1920 by a Russian physicist named Lev Sergeevich Termen, aka Leon Theremin, after the outbreak of the Russian Civil War. It was originally the product of Russian government-sponsored research into proximity sensors. After touring Europe with his invention, where he showed it to packed houses, Theremin made his way to the United States and patented it in 1928.

Man Barks At Dog....Gets Arrested.

Michigan - Authorities in Three Rivers say a 26-year-old man had been arrested for allegedly barking at a police dog.

Anija, a police K-9, had been left in a patrol car by its handler. When the office returned to the car he found the suspect barking and yelling at the dog.

According to the Kalamazoo Gazette the shouting caused the canine to become "excited and very aggressive." The man was arrested on suspicion of harassing a police animal and also faces a disorderly conduct charge. He has since been released after posting bond.

Napster Lowers Prices

Online music service, Napster, is set to drop the price of its least-expensive subscription music plan from $12.95 down to $5.

This low-cost subscription plan will allow users access to unrestricted streaming of its 7 million-song catalog and a new offering of five DRM-free downloads per month.

This plan is currently restricted to U.S. subscribers at this time.

The premium subscription will still cost $14.95 for users who would like to take content with them on portable devices (The i-pod is still not included).

At this time it is unclear if those subscribers will have the same access to the low-cost subscribers with the five free downloads.

You Can't Rob A Bank That Isn't There.....

Police in Nicholasville, Kentucky say an attempted armed robber failed because the bank he planned to rob was no longer a bank.

Police spokesman Scott Harvey said the suspect entered the Jessamine South Elkhorn Water District Office, formerly Farmer's Bank, and brandished a revolver. The suspect "left with nothing" after employees explained to him that he was not in a bank.

Office manager Diana Clark said the robber is not the first to be mistaken. "We've had people come in here asking to cash a check."

Nobody was harmed in the incident.

UMG vs. EFF

In May 2007 Universal Music Group sued a Los Angeles-based trader on eBay. Troy Augusto, who runs the business called "Roast Beast Music Collectibles", makes a living selling rare albums he bought at second-hand record stores.

UMG is suing Augusto for copyright infringement. They are saying that some of the items he offered for sale online were promotional copies and were not authorized for sale to the public.

Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a digital rights lobby group, is taking on the case on Augusto's behalf and is counter-suing Universal.

In regards to promotional copies, for quite some time record companies have maintained that they own these items and may ask for them to be returned at any time.

Due to the promo items that were contained in the eBay auctions from Mr Augusto, this is the argument that is close to being tested in court.

UMG's lawyers allege "Augusto's unauthorized distribution of the UMG promo CDs violated UMG's exclusive right to distribute its copyrighted works" in legal documents filed in the US District Court for the Central District of California.

This is a battle that will possibly shake things up for a bit.
